A Discerning Heart
It is during a unique communication session between Solomon and God in 1 Kings 3 that God utters a stunning statement, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you” Wow! What an open door! This wasn’t some fictitious genie in a bottle. This was Almighty God presenting Solomon with this incredible offer.
Solomon still doesn’t jump directly to his request. He gives credit to God for his position as king. Then finally, a full six sentences into his reply, Solomon makes his request known. What did he want? Incredible military success? Adoring loyalty of the people in his kingdom? A long and healthy life? Nope. None of these things. Solomon humbly requests a discerning heart.
His answer pleased the Lord greatly. And so, God not only granted Solomon what he asked for, but he also gifted him with blessings he didn’t request: wealth, honor and—if he would walk in obedience to God—a long life.
