Clothed in Humility

When we start following Christ, we are called to put off our old life and put on our new life. This transformation is often referred to in the Bible as a change of clothes. Just like we put on our favorite jacket at the beginning of the day, we are called to clothe ourselves with certain attributes and character qualities.

In 1 Peter 5:5, we are told to dress each day with humility toward one another. Sometimes this is easier said than done. Our pride can creep in, and before we know it, we are looking to our interests and needs instead of others. God uses circumstances in our lives like parenting, work, friendship, marriage, and more to help teach us to live with grace and humility towards those around us.

1 Peter 5:5 is our invitation to practice self-forgetfulness. Furthermore, the humility referred to in this verse has a powerful meaning. There was a particular kind of cape worn by slaves referred to as a tie-up. It showed their servitude. Like-wise, we are to wear our humility tied around us so that it is the outward mark and sign and the first thing others notice about us. This is a sincere and sacrificial love for others that we get to live out.
