God Uses the Ordinary

I am always fascinated by the way God takes something ordinary, combines it with a little faith and obedience from His followers, and then uses it to display His glory and show forth His power.

In the book of Judges, we encounter Samson, who one day wielded a simple object—the jawbone of a donkey—that God provided as a rather unconventional weapon. That improvised instrument, powered by the Spirit of the Lord, enabled Samson to strike down 1,000 Philistines.

In his encounter with his enemies, Samson was not alone. The Spirit of the Lord was powerfully on him. This wasn’t the first time God’s Spirit gave Samson victory. The Spirit was also with him when he tore a lion apart with his bare hands and when he struck down 30 men of Ashkelon in Judges 14.

Today, when we are facing spiritual battles, the victory is ours through our Lord Jesus Christ. He will never leave us or abandon us. (Hebrews 13:5) He will be with us to the end of the age. (Matthew 28:20) The Spirit of the Lord momentarily came upon Samson to empower him, and the Holy Spirit always helps us as believers today, guides us in all truth, and is our ever-present defender whenever we face a spiritual battle. (John 14:26-27; 16:13)
