Live with Skill

Most things in life we want to learn take study and practice. Everything from cooking to running to singing and so on. It takes intentional practice to become skilled at something. The same goes for life with God.

In the Old Testament, the word wisdom in Hebrew doesn’t just mean intelligence or some sort of super-spiritual knowing; it is often translated in the Bible as “skilled.” In our verse in the New Testament, Ephesians 5:15, we are instructed to “be wise,” or we might say, we need to be very careful to live a skilled life.

Skill takes practice and time. We aren’t born living by God’s standards. It is something we learn over time when we go to his Word and spend time with him in prayer. There is a wise way and a foolish way to walk through life.

As followers of Jesus, we are commanded to be wise, or skilled, in how we live. This means everything from skill in parenting to skill in our thoughts or how we use our time. We can’t just hope for the best, we must work at it, with God’s help. The good news is that we have the perfect example to follow. His name is Jesus.
