Renewing Our Minds: Finding Life and Peace in the Spirit

Romans 8:6 says, “The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.”
I am the first one to admit that I can struggle to keep my mind and thoughts under control. Worry creeps in too often, and I find myself going down ridiculous rabbit trails of what-ifs. There is a reason the Bible speaks so often about keeping our minds renewed and our thoughts under control. It is hard work, and it matters. Romans 8:6 tells us that “the mind governed by the flesh is death.” Yikes! Those rabbit trails can lead to despair and destruction.
Our thoughts indeed have an impact on us, but the good news is that there is hope! Romans 8:6 also tells us that we don’t have to live in the land of what-ifs because God offers us something better. We can surrender every thought to His power and presence, and when we do this, we can experience life and peace. We might say to have peace is to be absent of chaos! In essence, we have a rich spiritual life and future in Christ when we let the Spirit control our minds and guard our thoughts with the truth of the Gospel.
The key to remember here is that the power to change our thinking doesn’t come from us. It is the Holy Spirit working in us. When we surrender our wandering minds to Him, He is faithful to correct our thinking and give us His peace instead.
