Resting in His Shelter

When I am worried and my mind is restless, it seems I turn to everything else before God. I clean, I do laundry, I work, I go for a walk, and on and on and on. Anything to get my mind off my present circumstances. Most of the time, I don’t even realize I am in this cycle until God nudges me and reminds me that he is there.
I love Psalm 91:1 because it is a promise to us that when we turn to him, we can rest secure. Our minds can stop spinning. And our hearts can stop worrying. In fact, the word “rest” means to abide and remain. This is deeper than a quick rest. This is a quiet confidence and security that we are safe with him.
Do our responses, attitudes, and actions suggest that we are resting in the shadow of the Almighty? God doesn’t come close to us to keep us as we are. He calls us and graciously changes us from the inside out. I’m learning ever so slowly to stop, rest, and pray when my heart is heavy. His shelter is safe and secure.
