The Woman Who Dares to Laugh

There is plenty to worry about in today’s world. Whether it is a personal health diagnosis, a wayward child, financial struggles, or a strained relationship, the many things we face can threaten our peace and joy.

The book of Proverbs describes a woman who, although her life wasn’t perfect, was a person of character who can “laugh at the days to come.” She wasn’t overcome with worry and weariness or worn out from all that she had to do, but rather she laughed.

Sometimes I can forget to laugh, actually many times. I take the job of today so seriously that I can’t find the time to stop and enjoy it, or I’m consumed (rightfully so) with the struggles of life, and joy seems nowhere to be found. But the Proverbs 31 woman laughed, and it wasn’t just a shallow kind of joy you may think of when you think of laughing; she laughed because she trusted that God was in control.

In the Hebrew language, “she can laugh” means a mocking type of laugh, to make sport or to jest. It is almost like a dare at the days to come. That is the kind of laughing I want to experience. Laughter that stems from a heart that isn’t afraid of tomorrow and dares to have joy and hope because God is completely sovereign and can be trusted with every detail.
